A tooth consists of a crown and one or more roots. The crown is the functional part visible above the gum. The root is the unseen portion that supports and fastens the tooth in the jawbone.
The root is attached to the tooth-bearing bone, the alveolar of the jaws by a fibrous ligament called the periodontal ligament or membrane.
